Technique CIC: Training booklet for nurses

2. Materials required

• Catheters
• KY Jelly for boys, if necessary a mirror for girls
• Something to collect the urine into
• Pieces of cloth to wash genital area
• Water, soap, bowl to wash hands
• Latex free gloves for community workers
• Use of correct catheter size according to age
  

3. Choosing the correct catheter

• Use the largest catheter that can enter the urethra
• Short catheters for girls’ and baby boys’
• Boys’ from 5 years on use the long catheters
  

4. CIC technique

Explain the importance of CIC and the technique in a simple way to the parents and the child

4.1 .Cleaning hands

4.2 Cleaning the genital area

• Daily 1x with water and soap
• At every soiling or bowel movement
• Always wash from above to below to avoid bacteria from the bowel being brought forward to the urethra
• Change piece of cloth for each wiping action
